General description

We invite proposals for a collection of essays that examine the sociocultural and philosophical questions related to and inspired by the NBC series Grimm (2011-2017) (now also streaming on Amazon Prime). We envision these essays as exploring the series along holistic themes, but also with more in-depth analyses of specific episodes.  Chapter proposals of 500 words, along with brief bios, are sought for this collection, preliminarily expected to publish with McFarland (www.mcfarlandbooks.com).

Chapters exploring individual episodes, as well as the show’s narrative arc and themes are sought, as well as questions that this series raises about culture and media at large.

Some potential suggestions of topics and themes include, but are not limited to:

  • symbolic representations of race and ethnicity (as well as the significance of these categories as such) ethical and epistemological dilemmas; including multi-linguality
  • representation of the crime drama
  • sex, gender, and sexuality
  • constructs of family and kinship
  • role of folklore in 21st century
  • moral, metaphysical, and cultural questions
  • the limits and definition of the human
  • the ethics of privilege; class, status, elitism
  • communal belonging; inclusion and exclusion
  • nature of loyalty and ethics of secrecy
  • value of tradition
  • colonial and cross-cultural constructs
  • ability of the individual to change
  • nature of time; multiverses
  • biological determinism and free-will
  • passing/visibility
  • ethics of torture and capital punishment
  • role of historic and literary research and influence

Final chapter length is expected to run 5,000-7,000 words.  Preliminary proposals are sought for consideration.

Tentative timeline:

  • Proposal deadline:  June 10, 2019
  • Chapter invitations: June 30, 2019
  • Chapter Draft deadline: September 30, 2019

Please develop a proposal of no more than 500 words along with a brief biography (or vita) and send to the editors at GrimmCollection@gmail.com.  Any additional inquiries may be directed to the project email or to the editors privately.
