Representing The Body: Contemporary Media Discourse and The Real – Symposium Friday 28th April 2023

Venue: Glasgow Caledonian University

Deadline for abstracts: 16th December 2022

Please consider submitting a paper or roundtable proposal for our one-day symposium to be held at Glasgow Caledonian University focused upon ‘The Body: Contemporary Media Discourse and The Real’.

Representations of the body in mass media inevitably evoke issues and debates around authenticity and realism. Media offer powerful tools for creating images and narratives that may only be distantly or partially linked to lived human experience. The aim of this symposium is to explore the range of multimodal representational tropes related to the body across a wide variety of contemporary media including film, television, so-called ‘legacy’ media institutions, and all forms of digital media. We invite contributions for papers on a range of topics including but not limited to:

•       Representations of serious illness and disability in media and moving image narratives
•       Somatic metaphor in online multimedia
•       Narratives of care in broadcast and fiction
•       Body image and social media in multimodal communication
•       The body/identity dynamic in patient narratives online and in print
•       Gender and somatic presence in multimedia
•       Metaphors of the body in print media
•       Body framing in broadcast media
•       Conceptual metaphors of the body in journalism

Keynote Speaker: Dr Frances Pheasant-Kelly (Reader in Film and Screen Studies, University of Wolverhampton)

This symposium will bring together scholars and researchers from all career stages for a cross-disciplinary discussion from across media, communications, arts, and journalism studies. We encourage papers and roundtables from a range of scholars, and particularly wish to encourage research students to participate in the day.

Please submit your proposal abstracts up to 250 words and a short bio by 16 December 2022 to: Helena.Bassil-Morozow@gcu.ac.uk
